Canon EOS R system

Canon has finally joined the full-frame mirrorless war with its new EOS R mount system — 3 weeks ahead of Photokina 2018 and less than 2 weeks after Nikon introduced its Z mount system — on August 23, 2018.

Canon’s new RF mount is the same diameter as the EF mount (54mm) but with shorter back focus distance. This allows for lenses to sit closer to the sensor, utilizing larger rear lens elements for better optical performance. In addition, the new RF mount features a high-speed 12-pin communication system that provides faster and more in-depth communication between the camera and lens over existing Canon mount systems.

The new Canon EOS R features a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, powered by the latest DIGIC 8 image processor, enabling shooting at up to 8.0 frames per second, while taking advantage of the Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone (24x16) real-time metering system. In combination with f/1.2 lenses, the new camera is capable AF sensitivity in low light in as little as EV-6; while retaining full compatibility with all legacy EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses through the use of mount adapters.
When using manual focus, Focus Peaking can help to establish the focus area quickly and clearly by indicating the area in focus with a colored line.

The camera has a native ISO range of 100-40,000, expandable to 50-102,400, supporting both Canon's 14-bit CRW Raw format as well as the relatively new C-Raw, offering much smaller file sizes. The fastest shutter speed available is 1/8000 sec, with an X-sync speed of 1/200 sec.

Under the slim dSLR-style is hidden the electronic OLED viewfinder with 100% coverage and resolution of 3.69 million dots, a magnification of 0.76x and a 23mm eye-relief. As can be expected from Canon, there is a fully articulating, horizontal-swivel, touch-enabled 3.2" display with 2.1 million dots. A customizable touchpad to the right of the viewfinder allows for quickly changing ISO, white balance, movie shooting and more.

Similar to Nikon Z-series cameras, the new Canon EOS R offers just one UHS-II memory card slot. The camera has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI, USB-C, wired remote, headphone and microphone sockets.

The first EOS R lenses are a 24-105mm f/4 L, a 50mm f/1.2mm L, a 28-70mm f/2 L, and a 35mm f/1.8 macro.

Canon EOS R can record 4K 30p, Full HD 60p or HD 120p videos using IPB or ALL-I compression and save them as MP4 files with helpful functions like distortion correction during recording and Movie Digital IS.
