World’s first photo contest judged by the Huawei P20 Pro Artificial Intelligence and a Pro Photographer

Huawei AI Photo Contest Spark a Renaissance Summer 2018

Inspired from it's 2017 and 2018 thematic contests, jointly run in partnership with New York’s “the International Center of Photography” (ICP), Huawei launched the World's First Co-Judged by Artificial Intelligence Photo Contest called “Spark a Renaissance”, inspiring discussions and controversies amongst photographers and industry journalists.

The Contest will run from 12th July to 6th September 2018 and will feature 5 weekly photographic themes.

A New Renaissance12th to 20th July 2018 — photos should reinterpret or recreate Renaissance art and could be based around Renaissance themes including portraits, realism, landscape, light and classical mythology.

After Dark — 24th July to 1st August 2018 — photos should showcase low light photography or almost complete darkness with a focus upon detail, and contrast.

Deep in Detail5th to 13th August 2018 — photos should feature close up photography, with an aim of bringing the photography subject closer without compromising on image quality.

Moment in Time — 17th to 25th August 2018 — photos should aim to capture movement and action whilst keeping the image crisp and detailed.

Wide Eyed World — 29th August to 6th September 2018 — photos should be centered around landscapes and city-scapes.

Winner Selection

P20 Pro Competition: All valid contest entries received during each Weekly Period will be judged instantly by an Artificial Intelligence program to provide a score out of 100 based on the following criteria (the “AI Criteria”):

  • The overall balance of elements within the composition.
  • The colour harmony within the image.
  • Whether the image is well lit.
  • If the rule of thirds has been followed.
  • The vividness of the colours.
  • Whether the image subject is in focus.
  • Whether the image doesn’t feature any jitter or shakiness.

We have trained the AI in our Huawei P20 Pro smartphone to understand what makes an amazing photo. This innovation is helping us to identify emerging creative talent across Europe and showcase their photography potential to others.

The 10 top scoring entries for each country, each Weekly Period will then be judged independently by a neutral representative of Leica based on the following criteria (the “Leica Criteria”): artistic expression, balance, meaning, message, adherence/appropriateness to theme, execution, timing, photographic techniques, originality, clarity of expression, innovative means of delivering message, visual design, clarity and quality of submission, colour, lighting, exposure and focus, tone and competition to select the best entry from each country (a total of 10 winners per Weekly Period).

Weekly Influencer Competition: The top 50 scoring entries, that have been judged by the Artificial Intelligence programme for each influencer received during each Weekly Period will be judged by that Official Influencer based on the Leica Criteria, to select a winner per Weekly Period. A total 50 winners will be selected (5 winners per country, per Weekly Period).

Trip to Florence Competition: All 50 winners throughout the P20 Pro Competition will be judged independently by a representative of Leica based on the Leica Criteria, to select the best entrant from each country (a total of 10 winners). Those 10 best entrants will win the Trip to Florence Prize.

Grand Tour Competition: All winners of the Trip to Florence Prize will have the opportunity to submit up to 5 photographs each taken during their trip to Florence. All photographs submitted by the winners of the Trip to Florence Prize will be judged by an Artificial Intelligence programme based on the AI Criteria and an independent representative of Leica based on the Leica Criteria to select the best photograph. The score of the Artificial Intelligence programme and the representative of Leica, each have a 50% weighting to produce an overall score out of 100%. The entrant that submitted the best photograph will win the Grand Tour Prize

Winner Notification: Winners will be contacted via the email address provided on entry within 3 working days of judging and will be required to respond to confirm eligibility plus acceptance of the prize within 7 days of initial contact. If a winner does not respond to communications within the 7 days of initial contact, the Promoter reserves the right to disqualify that winner and allocate that prize to an alternative winner selected in the same manner. If a winner is disqualified, the Promoter reserves the right to award the Prize to a reserve winner selected in the same manner.

Who may enter the contest?

This Huawei's contest is open for entries only to legal residents, aged 16 and over, of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
